Des Moines, the largest city in Iowa was once the junction of numerous railroad routes. Of these, the Rock Island built the most trackage into the town. Other railroads, such as the Chicago & North Western, Milwaukee Road, Chicago Great Western, Wabash and Chicago, Burlington & Quincy also came into the city.
Several of these routes still exist, while many of the excess routes have since been converted to trail usage.
